Breaking: Senate Confirms Justice Olukayode Ariwoola as substance CJN

The Nigerian Senate confirms Olukayode Ariwoola as Chief Justice of Nigeria.

The Nigerian Senate has screened and confirmed Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), as the substantive CJN. Ariwoola’s confirmation as CJN followed his answers to Senators’ questions, and he was asked to take a bow at 12.45pm.

Remember that on July 26th, 2022, the Senate received a letter from President Muhammadu Buhari requesting the screening and subsequent confirmation of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who is currently acting as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), to be a substantive one.

Justice Olukayode Ariwoola confirmed as the substance CJN President Buhari’s letter, dated July 25, 2022, was read aloud during plenary by Senate President Ahmad Lawan. “Pursuant to Section 231(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), I forward for Senate confirmation the appointment of Hon. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola as Chief Justice of Nigeria.”

“While I hope that the submission will be considered in the usual expeditious manner, please accept my highest consideration, Distinguished Senate President.”

President Buhari appointed Justice Ariwoola as CJN following the resignation of former Chief Justice Muhammad Tanko on June 27, 2022.

Tanko’s resignation came amid a protest by 14 disgruntled Justices over welfare issues.

However, in his resignation letter, the former CJN cited health reasons as the reason for his decision. Remember that President Buhari swore in Ariwoola as acting CJN last month, following the sudden resignation of Justice Ibrahim Tanko on health grounds.

With his confirmation by the Senate, Ariwoola becomes the third person to hold the country’s top Judiciary position during this administration’s tenure.

Remember that Justice Walter Onnoghen was also the CJN during President Buhari’s administration before resigning.
